Carers ACT

Carers ACT is the peak body for all carers in the ACT. By carers we mean partners, spouses, children, family friends or neighbours who assist someone who has a disability, is ageing or has an ongoing mental or other illness or terminal illness.

Carers provide unpaid help with daily living activities such as housework, transport, health care, meals, personal care, emotional support, etc.

While such caring can be rewarding, it can also bring financial hardship, social isolation, health and wellbeing issues, frustration, extreme stress and exhaustion. Carers therefore often need support in their caring role to maintain their own health and wellbeing.

Carers ACT provides that support through many diverse ways including practical support such as short term replacement care when a carer needs a break, information and referrals, counselling, support groups, educational workshops, social and therapeutic activities, advice on the NDIS, MyAgedCare and mental health systems, and advocacy.

We also work with industry and government to make Canberra more carer-friendly.
